"Do not judge or you too will be judged." Matthew 7:1
When we judge others, we are condemning them. We are cutting deeply at their hearts. We are demeaning them as a person. We our depriving them of their human dignity. We are comparing them to ourselves and cutting them down to size. We are attacking their worth. We are, in essence, rejecting them.
When a Christian has learned not to judge or condemn, he has begun to taste a bit more of what it means to follow Jesus. He has entered more of what the Kingdom of God is like. He has become more like Jesus.
Jesus tells us to look at the board in our own eye before we point to the speck in our brother's eye. The fact is that you can't help someone that you can not see. And people who use judgment and condemnation as a means to correct someone are merely showing their own inability to see clearly.
Jesus never corrected people by tearing them down. He knew that this would only hurt them more and cause them to move away from you. Jesus corrected people for the purpose of restoring them, not belittling them.
To restore someone, we must approach them in a way that is honoring, loving, patient, and gentle. When was the last time you changed your ways because it was forced on you or demanded of you?
We are a community that needs to learn how to follow Jesus in the way he corrected others. We must let go of the judgmental attitude that we are so well known for. We must take on the way of Jesus. Paul echoes the correct attitude in Galatians 6:1 when he urges us to restore others gently and remember that we are vulnerable to the very same sins of our brothers.
To judge is to be unChristlike.
May we humbly ask our God to teach us how to correct others in love not condemnation. For "there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus".
